Paul Berkman spoke on the theme of Systems and Infrastructure in the “Status of Earth Observations in the Arctic” plenary session organized by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) at the 2016 Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavík. The session featured a spectrum of science and policy experts, including an overview of Arctic observations in different environmental domains and a panel discussion of crosscutting issues, opportunities, and potential solutions for the future. Barbara J. Ryan, Secretariat Director of GEO, moderated the session.
Additional contributing speakers included Jouni Pulliainen, Head of the Arctic Research Unit at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, on the theme of Atmosphere; Henning Wehde, Head of the Research and Advice Programme North Sea at the Institute of Marine Research, on the theme of Oceans and Sea Ice; Tom Barry, Executive Secretary of the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) Arctic Council Working Group, on the theme of Biodiversity; and Larry Hinzman, Professor and Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Vice-Chair of Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (SAON).
